It's been fun!

Our lives have been a whirling-twirling dance the past year. We moved to Alaska (no more homeschooling requirements!), but continue to travel a lot and spend months-at-a-time with family back in PA.

I'm working full-ish time teaching college classes and Noor continues to do the things she loves (and not go to school): animation, Minecrafting, hiking, insect-collecting, sculpting, cuddling. Our days are full! Too full, at this point, for me to maintain this blog.

Thanks for joining us here! I'll leave the blog up for folks who need some help figuring out how to unschool in a regulation-heavy state, with an added note, that I would likely do things very differently if I had to document again. Email me for details, but suffice to say, I wouldn't be nearly as dedicated to doing things the way "they" expect things to look, this time around. No subject-designations, unless absolutely required, for example. Learning just doesn't happen that way :)

Portfolio Summary 2012-2013

Language Arts

Noor continues to develop her reading fluency by reading on a daily basis for information and pleasure.  She enjoys writing comics, emails, letters and reviews. She still prefers typing to writing by hand, which is an area we will continue to work on.  Her spelling continues to improve. Her reading comprehension has improved dramatically as her reading level has skyrocketed.

This year, Noor became fascinated with folk stories and mythology.  We spent a good portion of the year exploring these across cultures and time periods.

Noor spent a lot of time conducting research to further her understanding of the many things that interest her.  She is now competent in Library Skills, alphabetizing, using a dictionary, encyclopedia, wikis, and other online resources.  Noor spent quite a bit of time this year learning how to evaluate online resources.

Science

Noor’s interest in herpetology and entomology grew this year as she continued to learn about, identify and care for various indigenous insects and amphibians.

A developing interest in evolution took us to many of the local Natural History museums in our area. Numerous times, we visited the Smithsonian’s Hall of Human Origins and then immediately visited the Ape House at the National Zoo.

We conducted a lot of experiments at home including, but not limited to, growing different kinds of crystals as the result of learning about solutions, chemical reactions, the process of crystallization, atoms and ions and molecules. We made agar plates and grew samples of bacteria from our home environment. We explored the lifecycle of plants by growing much of our summer and fall produce from seed we’d harvested from our plants last year. Noor also furthered her knowledge base of edible local wild plants. She dissected a frog, a squid, an owl pellet, and a female Cardinal. She also measured and measured and charted the difference in decibel levels of her old and new continuous glucose sensor receivers when she learned about sound.

Our trip to Alaska brought about an interest in the Aurora Borealis, glaciers and global warming and Noor continues to follow NASA’s Mars Curiosity. We also attended the World Maker Faire in New York, where Noor discovered 3-D printers, which she’s been researching.

Noor continued to participate in the weekly science class, Earth Explores, at the White Clay Creek Nature Education Center in DE.  Her studies with Ms. Kathleen ranged from plant and animal identification and classification to waterways, irrigation and water health, weather and clouds, and many other interesting topics in between.

Geography

Noor’s travels this year took her to Alaska, Arizona, Vermont and all along the Eastern Seaboard.  Noor continued to develop her map skills (longitude, latitude, scale) by helping to plan our trips and participating in research about our destinations.

Noor became fascinated by climate differences as well as with global warming and the way it is effecting various regions in terms of weather, physical geography, and wildlife patterns.

Learning about geothermal energy at Chena Hot Springs in Alaska

History, PA History and Civics

I’ve combined these three subjects because much of Noor’s learning in these areas was interdisciplinary.  She learned about democracy and other forms of government, the Women’s Suffrage and Civil Rights movements, and followed the Presidential election with interest. We visited many local and distant historical sites and attended historical reenactments portraying colonial life in our area and Indigenous life in Alaska and in the South West.

Our trip to Alaska spurned an interest in the Gold Rush and the history of dog sledding, which was furthered by following the Iditarod, The Yukon Quest and attending all three days of the Open North American. Noor also spent the day with Dario, a 9-time Iditarod veteran, learning about dogsledding from an historical, practical, and hands-on perspective.

Health and Safety

Noor visited our local Fire Station this year and was given a private tour of the engines and facility.  We practiced fire drills at home and talked about and prepared for Hurricane Sandy.

This year we also discussed the dangers of smoking and alcohol. We practiced bicycle and water/boating safe practices and Noor learned about bear safety in preparation for this summer, when she’ll be spending a lot of time in the Alaskan wilderness.

Physical Education

Noor hikes a few times a week and goes rock climbing, swimming and biking whenever possible.

Art

Noor continued to spend two hours a week with her art tutor Daniel Moyer.  This year, their primary focus was on animation (using Flash), animal anatomy, art history, timing in animation, color theory and tonal structure in illustration and film.

On average, Noor spends 2-4 hours a day drawing, sketching, painting and sculpting. She has completed numerous story boards for future animated films and maintains her own YouTube channel where she uploads her work.

Noor sewed and then sold over 30 fabric cats to raise money for a local women and children’s shelter.
