Sound

We had an interesting talk last night about dog whistes, which led to a discussion about sound waves.  With the help of Poppa's tuning fork and Shama's drum and a paperclip, we were able to see sound waves in action!

If you look really close, in between the two ends of the tuning fork, you can see the vibrational waves:

What do you see?
Waves in the water!

Why?
Because the sound waves vibrate the water

What did the sound wave travel through?
Water--liquid.

What happens to the medium (the water) when a sound wave travels through it?
It vibrates.

Look at how the paperclip bounces!
What do you see?
The paperclip bounces up.

Why?
Because of the vibration on the drum.

What did the sound wave travel through?
The drum. It is solid.

What happens to the medium (the drum) when a sound wave travels through it?
It shakes.
